Faridpur, located in the heart of Bangladesh, is a district known for its natural beauty and historical significance. It has been the birthplace of several notable personalities, including Ambikacharan Majumdar, a prominent Indian politician and the 31st President of the Indian Congress. Faridpur holds a sacred place in the memory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the revered father of the Bengali nation.

The district has faced challenges such as natural calamities and river erosion, which have made it difficult for the local population to access essential healthcare services. Despite its proximity to the capital city of Dhaka, the vast Padma River has hindered communication and created barriers to healthcare access for many. Consequently, there has been a long-standing demand for a fully-fledged medical college and hospital in Faridpur.

Recognizing this need, the government of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, after the country's independence, took steps to establish a medical college and a modern hospital in Faridpur. Initially, four medical college assistant training schools were set up in Faridpur, Noagali, Comilla, and Kushtia. However, the demand for a comprehensive medical college persisted.

In 1992, the government made a policy decision to establish five medical colleges, including one in Faridpur, to improve healthcare quality for a larger population. The establishment of Faridpur Medical College was officially notified on 18th September 1992. The college commenced its educational activities on 12th August 1992, admitting 50 students in the first year of the MBBS course.

Initially, the college operated from the administrative building and hostel of Faridpur Mats, a medical assistant training school. The college faced challenges in terms of infrastructure and equipment, but with hope for the future, everyone remained patient. Efforts were made to address these issues, including the construction of dormitories and the establishment of a 250-bed hospital in Harukandi, near the Barisal-Faridpur highway.

Over the years, Faridpur Medical College has seen several dedicated principals, each contributing to its growth and development. The college has created a beautiful, quality, and disciplined learning environment. The results of professional examinations have been satisfactory, and the availability of books has improved. Students actively engage in humanitarian activities through organizations like Sandhani, Modini, and Pratiti. Various clubs, including Film and Music Society, Photography and Debating Club, and Rotaract Club, add to the vibrant campus life.

Faridpur Medical College Hospital, which initially started with 250 beds, is now being upgraded to 650 beds. It serves as a model for modernizing healthcare services and bringing advanced medical facilities to the community. The present government's foresight and efficiency in this regard are widely appreciated.
